Kinetic Light Orchestra — Lendhafen, Austria

Lendhafen · Klagenfurt, Austria · Proposal for 2027

An orchestra moved by the wind

Fifteen-second concept study with Johann Strauss II’s The Blue Danube. AI-assisted visualisation and simulated movement; this is a proposal, not a completed installation. Recording: United States Marine Band, Albert F. Schoepper.

The installation

A fisherman sits on the roof of the small white hut at Lendhafen. From the fishing rod in his hands, eight illuminated birds hover approximately 30 centimetres above the water. The rod reaches about two metres over the canal. The complete eight-bird mobile weighs less than five kilograms.

Seven balanced arms turn freely around their suspension points. The wind continually changes the relationships between the birds, while their light meets its reflection in the canal. Each bird is an individual, hand-painted UV-resin form, with its own wing shape and a light at its centre.

The eight birds form a musical octave: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si, do. They remain softly illuminated throughout. When a corresponding note sounds, its bird brightens; when several notes sound together, several birds can brighten together. Light follows a programmed musical score while physical movement remains wind-driven.

The accompanying fifteen-second study uses Johann Strauss II's The Blue Danube. It visualises the proposed movement and note-responsive brightness; the final repertoire, light programme and operating sessions will be developed in agreement with Lendhauer.

A fisherman at Lendhafen

The proposed location is the small white hut beside the Elisabethsteg at Lendhafen, Klagenfurt, Austria. The seated fisherman makes the support part of the artwork: he appears to hold the entire mobile through the rod in his hands, with no external guy ropes or wall-mounted boom.

The final location and use of the hut are proposals, not permissions already granted. The figure's internal support, roof interface, rod and suspension require site agreement and a verified technical solution before installation.

Coexistence and control

What can we compose, and what must we leave open? The balanced structure establishes relationships, the light programme follows music, and the wind makes movements that cannot be repeated exactly. The canal is an active part of the work: changing water and reflections create another moving composition.

A familiar human figure watches over a flock that remains in motion. People, sculptural birds, air, water and a programmed light system share the same setting. The work invites attention to the ways controlled systems and living surroundings coexist, without trying to control every encounter.

A public place to pause

The installation can be experienced from the public waterfront, while seated or standing, without a ticket, phone or physical contact with the sculpture. People can pause briefly or remain through a longer musical passage. Routes for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users must remain clear, and viewing should not require leaning over the water.

Music would use a separate, modest sound system at agreed levels and times. Light, sound and operation will be considered in relation to neighbours, wildlife and other uses of the canal. Outside musical sessions, the work can be experienced through its movement and light alone.

Making the work

Mobile Eight individual illuminated birds, seven freely pivoting balanced arms; complete mobile under 5 kg. Final arm dimensions, clearances and suspension lengths to be confirmed.
Position Approximately 2 m horizontal reach from the fisherman's rod; birds approximately 30 cm above the agreed operating water level. Final clearance must accommodate water-level variation and movement.
Support Seated sculptural fisherman holding the rod. An internal load-bearing assembly and approved roof interface will resolve the support; the figure is not a substitute for structural verification.
Light and music Programmable LED control and synchronised playback; continuous baseline glow with note-responsive increases in brightness. Separate audio system. Movement remains driven by air, not the lighting controller.
Materials and recovery Hand-painted UV-resin forms, metal arms, fine suspension lines and protected lighting connections. Reusable, recoverable components; no release of material into the canal.

Installation and care

Before travel: agree the site and permissions; confirm the figure, rod and roof support; resolve outdoor power, wiring, sound, weather limits and funding. Manufacture and test the mobile in Colombia, and arrange packing and transport.

After handover: we leave rather than remain for the exhibition. Lendhauer and the artist agree local inspection, care, security, shutdown procedures, deinstallation and return arrangements. The proposed exhibition falls between June and September 2027; exact dates and duration are to be agreed.

Carlos Osin · Casa DaVinci

Carlos Osin develops kinetic sculpture through Casa DaVinci, based in Mesa de Ruitoque, Santander, Colombia. His practice brings together mobiles, light and translucent colour, from suspended works to smaller sculptural objects. Casa DaVinci also offers self-assembly mobile workshops in which participants choose forms and colours, construct their own mobiles and explore balance through changes in weight and position.
